The other day I, and the family, went to the annual Word on the Street festival in Toronto. We had a great time, bought a bunch of books, ate a bunch of overpriced yet terrible food, and just hung out.

I met a few of my book club buddies and their respective families, though I was disappointed that I didn’t meet Grandpa Roger’s family. He warned us not to flirt with his son (who is my age by the way and is known for being a ladies man) but then didn’t bother to bring him to the festival! I guess he feared that our younger friend Darien would make a man out of him. Huzzah!

Another friend, Drew, came with his wife in tow. He’s so tall, and she’s so short, it was adorable really. I shouldn’t say she’s short, she’s probably taller then me but whatever. Now they warned us that they like to visit every single tent in the festival, twice… I feel bad though I think we held them back.

It was really hard to keep the eight of us together, some people wanted to eat, whilst others wanted to use the loo, etc, etc. Anyways, we managed.

This year we didn’t sign up for any author talks or signings, the kids just didn’t have the patience for that sort of thing. But I believe we all had a splendid time.

Alright so I failed to write about my weekend with the Wicked sisters (Pixie, Word Taster, and Zoe).

We had a blast of a time at Word on the Street, the last Sunday in September. Bought lots of good books, ate lots of good food, ahem, corn on the cob and donuts, and generally bashed anyone in our way. Good times.

Some things I learned:

- The lady with the walker motors faster than the rest of us combined.

- Good friends are those that protect you from your fears, no matter how ridiculous they might be.

- Bees like hot peppers and hot dogs as much as they like funnel cake and sweet corn.

- Robert Charles Wilson is so famous that I find it difficult to talk to him. But I did announce his presence and spread awareness around to all the folk, so for those who didn’t know he was there, well they still had the opportunity to get his signature.

- Lorina Stephens, don’t stand up honey, you might hurt yourself.

- Elizabeth May shouldn’t speak in public.

- Don’t make eye contact with Karen Dales whilst whispering about “the lady in the picture” she’ll call you over and you’ll be forced to have a conversation.

- When all you want is corn, you have no time for pleasantries. Or manners. Or table etiquette.

- Walter the Farting Dog is a series of over-priced books, but who can resist with such a catchy character.
