Word of the Day – Exacerbate

This is one of my favourite words and I try to use it whenever I get the chance. Here’s the definition according to Dictionary.com

Basically it means to make a problem worse, or to piss someone off on purpose.

As a side note, don’t you hate it when people make up their own words in place of existing words? I mean I’m all for creativity, but saying “irregardless” is just stupidity. That word is non-existent. Or perhaps it’s existent but incorrect. The word is just regardless, plain and simple. Wikipedia explains why, here.

So as a bonus to the word of the day, I thought I’d look up ‘exasperate’ as well. I wanted to know the difference between that and exacerbate, as these two seem interchangeable.

As defined by Merriam-Webster:

Interestingly enough, it pretty much means the same thing, and the two can in fact be used synonymously. I believe the difference is that exasperation means to aggravate, whereas exacerbation means to aggravate more (to aggravate with the intent of aggravating).

At least that’s how I see it.

Now on to Google Images. The first image is clearly of a man exacerbating his back. He knows it will hurt his back but he does it anyways.

Exacerbate

what the f**k?

This image comes up for “exasperate” but to me, it looks like she’s aggravating on purpose… it must mean exacerbate. She knows what she’s doing!

Exasperate

what the f**k?

Frindle may have to be the next word of the day…

I would think the difference is:

“He exacerbated things and this exasperated his partner.”

    Maybe. :)

I’m exasperated to see this fine morning that I have to cut the stupid grass again. All this rain just exacerbated things. But irregardless, it’s still a beautiful day and I’m still retired and that won’t change….regardless….he he he
