Open to Discussion

bandsI recently had a discussion with my colleague on gay marriage. It was a short discussion because the two of us felt the same way. If two people love each other and want to get married, what difference does gender make?

Why do we care enough to get involved? Honestly, if two guys get married, how does that impact me personally? It doesn’t.

If two girls get married, does that make my marriage less meaningful? No. I’m not religious so maybe I’m not getting the full scope of things, but I don’t see how a marriage of two people will have any relevance on me. If they want to be happy, why should I stop them? I’d say the same thing if it was a man and woman, so again I ask what difference does gender make?

If you’re whole argument against gay marriage is religion, I’m still confused. Let’s say you’re right. Let’s say that two people of the same gender should not be together because that’s what God said somewhere in the bible. So, I’m assuming that these two gay people (married or not) will likely go to Hell, according to those who follow the bible.

I still don’t see how that affects those who are not gay. Are you going to go to Hell because two people get married? I’m not following. I believe divorce is against the bible as well but you don’t see petitions and laws passed banning divorce, so why are we rallying against gay marriage?

I’d like to open this up for discussion. Are you for, or against gay marriage, and why? I mean no disrespect to anyone, but shouldn’t we follow our hearts and do the things that make us happy, so long as it doesn’t hurt anyone else?

I feel the same way who cares, what they do does not affect love is love. Who are we to preach to them what is right, when the time comes its them and god. Religious people should know better because it also states clearly that we should not judge any individual, thats the Lords job, no ones perfect so we cant be going around trying to wrong others. People are people some men like men, some people like to be tied down and spanked. Really does not bother me, let them be, why should they not be allowed to spend their lives together as a married couple.

They should have the legal right to get married. Now I am not religious at all but I do respect the right of these religions not to want to marry people of the same sex in their churches. It is after all their beliefs. What these religions find morally right or wrong is no concern of mine, But to prevent these people from getting legally married is very wrong. If two people are happy and want to share their lives who am i to decide that it is wrong. So yes for legal marriage and yes to religious marriages if the religion that you believe in actually believes in you.

i agree Roger. And good points for "where" to have these marriages.

true true… and what about "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone" Though I'm sure you can find websites that describe all the reasons why this isn't hypocritical behaviour

i don't really see why it's a big deal. if they love each other and want to spend the rest of their lives together, they should be able to have that right. love is love, you can't help who it happens with. like you said, if it doesn't affect you any way, why does it matter? is it going to harm you in any way? no. let people be themselves and have feelings for whoever they want to have feelings for.

What a beautifully written discussion jac! I feel the exact same way, and my boyfriend and I were actually talking about this the other day while we were driving, There are so many other things going on in the world today that need "our" attention Like the war going on right now, and helping our planet, and they are putting so much money and time into this issue. I don't understand why Marriage only depends on the anatomy. When two people love each other like you said Why are people denying them their rights to get married? The Heart Loves, Who the Heart Loves, Why the hell should it bother other people. It just doesn't make sense to me when they're are things in the world that people should be giving a damn about.

thanks Cathy – and exactly lolthe only conclusion we could come to was that if gay people get married, it makes straight-marriage less meaningful. we don't understand how or why, but that is the only reason we could think of that would make anyone anti-gay-marriagesaying it out loud seems silly though lol

It does seem slightly bizarre that there's such a kerfuffle about same-sex marriages, yet some people are all too happy to close their eyes and ears to domestic violence and abuse in heterosexual marriages. I'm not saying this doesn't happen, more the fact that it's often brushed over by people that know it's going on.Shouldn't we be more concerned about respect for all as opposed to blacklisting a part of humanity because of their sexuality? I'm pretty sure there are more important things to worry about – North Korea's nuclear program, the environment, the economy, falling healthcare standards and 60,000 charities having to close in Canada through lack of support being just some – rather than decrying the happiness of John and John or Mary and Mary….

    good points, Brown :)

There are a lot of arguments against gay marriage (all of which I think are completely ridiculous), but the most popular one is tthat if we allow two men or two women to marry each other, then people are eventually going to want to marry animals and even inanimate objects. 'Cause, of course we ALL know somebody who wants to marry his/her dog or car…A lot of it also is in the title of being "married". Gay marriage opponents believe the sanctity of the word "marriage" will be destroyed if gay marriage is legalized. But, let's face it, with the divorce rate as high as it is, trying to protect the sanctity of marriage is futile.

I am like you Jac, I don't see how it is right to withhold the right from same sex couples. And it seems to be the older generation that has the most problems with the idea. Why shouldn't everyone have to the right to live the way they wish with the ones they love.

i guess what kills me the most is what happened in California. First it wasn't allowed, then it was, and then it wasn't again. I'd think there are bigger issues at hand then what to do with the gay couples who want to marry. Maybe they should ban divorce in that state. Make all the celebs think twice about it.

  • http://www.justkickinit.ca jacstar

i was wondering when someone would bring up the animals and inanimate objects argument… seriously though? do people really think that is the next step after gay marriage is legalized? because two consenting adults getting married leads to one consenting adult trying his luck with a squirrel or something???that's just crazy that people would actually think that, or try that for that matter. but if someone wants to marry a squirrel, i hardly think they will be more inclined to do so because "the homos can do it" – you know these squirrel loving folk have already tried and if we can marry inanimate objects, i'd marry my bed in a heartbeat… then divorce it and marry another in a good 5-10 years

  • cindyorischuk

Seriously, now the state of California is in Bankruptcy Protection, think about how rescinding the ban could stimulate their economy. Marriage licences would increase, plus all the money people spend on the actual weddings. Those businesses pay taxes, so it would stimulate their economy.

I'm not religious either. I really don't understand why people in power are against gay marriage. I think a lot of them are religious, and they either believe it's wrong and/or it scares them. If a person can't understand something, they usually fear/hate it. People should be able to love whomever they wish. It's better for 2 men or 2 women to be together, than for a them to be in a loveless relationship. There are people being abuse and beaten by their "loved ones", but the government is focusing on gay marriage?! That just makes no sense! If one of my children turned out to be gay, I wouldn't care one bit. They're still who they are, they just prefer the same gender as theirs. My husband's the same, though when we had a conversation about it, he says "What about my bloodline…that can't be passed on if they adopt" He pouted a little bit, I know in the end he really wouldn't care. As for me, as long as I have a grandchild, blood related or not, I'm happy, lol. I don't know how my parents would react though. I don't know their thoughts on gay marriage. I've watched the news with them a few times when it's mentioned, and I say something like "That's so stupid, so what if they're gay? Love is love." They don't respond to it, and the looks on their faces…I dunno. I often wondered what they would say if I told them I was attracted to both men and women…my mom would probably freak, lol. Oh well, she barely knows anything about me anyway and cares more about my daughter than me. I wonder, does it actually say somewhere in the bible (the original not the new altered ones) that being gay is a sin? I think it's something that was added later or that the church thought up. They say that God loves all his children, well "all" doesn't mean "everyone except for these people…cause they're different". I was watching tv one day and one of the guys from the Barenaked Ladies said something like "People are like sandwhiches, if they were all peanut butter and jelly, the world would be pretty boring."I could probably rant about this subject all day, but then my fingers would get really sore, lol.

lol it's truei googled bible hypocracy and found a website that justified the scriptures. For example, the one i quoted earlier about casting the first stone…. to the average person that might mean, since none of us are perfect, who are we to throw stones at others for their imperfections?but according to this site, it didn't actually mean that. i couldn't read any more of the crap on the site honestly. they were just babbling on and on about why certain scriptures weren't exactly what they sounded like. The site was trying to explain why Christians were not hypocritical, how they could judge even though it says you shouldn't judge in the bible…i just think it's funny that the site said that you shouldn't take things in the bible so literal – but isn't that where all the problems stem from???

That's the Church for you. When I was born, they wouldn't baptize me because my mom wasn't married to my father (my father IS a minister). 3 years ago, I couldn't be godmother to my bestfriends son, because I refused to be re-baptized as a roman catholic.
