Does the poll matter?

You know those people that strike up random polls on the Internet?

‘What’s your favourite colour?’
‘What time do you get up in the morning?’
‘If you were a dessert, which would you be?’

I’d like to know who uses these polls. Does anyone actually filter through the information? Do people ponder whether or not they would be an apple pie or a cheese dorito?

I don’t ever feel I’m contributing much, or that my voice matters – so no polls for me, thanks!

It depends – a lot of the times these polls are for genuine market research that can help plan new product launches (or changes needed before launching).

Other times it can be for people who wnat to know more about what their blog readers want to hear more about, or what design you prefer on a website, or do you like the new Facebook design over the old one.

Of course, now and again you'll get ones that say "Did this poll get you to vote?", which kinda answers itself, no? :)

perhaps – but mostly i think people have gone poll crazy

like they can't post a blog without adding a poll somewhere in it…

you must be looking at business blogs, but i'm talking about the personal ones

perhaps you guys are missing the obvious

i was referring to specific examples and general blogs. not market research, not the national elections

just random posts that no one looks at but always seem to end up in my email inbox

I guess in that case, it’s harmless fun. It’s like the “25 Things” meme on Facebook that people often call a waste of time but still fill out.

Where there’s a need for just fluff, people will still offer fluff.
